Kvernufoss Waterfall
Start at Skógar Museum and follow the path into Kvernugil canyon. Kvernufoss is a separate walk from nearby Skógafoss, so leave time for the approach as well as the waterfall.
Find the right trailhead

Katla Geopark describes an approximately 20-minute walk to the falls through Kvernugil. Budget for the whole stop
A 20-minute approach does not mean a 20-minute stop. Here is an example you can adjust before adding Kvernufoss to a South Coast itinerary.

Replace these allowances with what your group needs. A slower walk, a closed path or a longer photography stop changes the result. Set a time to turn back that leaves room for the return; do not rush to make the example fit.
Check access before entering the gorge
The Geopark warns that rock behind the waterfall can be loose and slippery. Reaching that recess is optional. What to look for on the approach
Katla Geopark identifies basalt columns, cube-jointed basalt and layers of palagonite tuff in the canyon. The walk offers more than the final waterfall view: look at the different rock patterns from the path. Kvernufoss or Skógafoss?
If your main goal is Skógafoss, give that visit its own time first. Add Kvernufoss when you also want the canyon walk and have time for a separate approach. Do not add it solely on a promise of fewer crowds: this guide has no visitor counts to support one.
If you want to include the museum, check its hours and ticket arrangements separately. Walking to Kvernufoss is not a substitute for the museum visit, and the walking estimate does not include either the museum or the drive between stops.

Where does the Kvernufoss walk start?
Visit South Iceland places the start at the Skógar Museum car park. Follow the marked path toward Kvernugil canyon; do not treat the Skógafoss car park as the same trailhead.
How long should I allow?
Katla Geopark estimates about 20 minutes to reach the waterfall. That is the outward walk, not a complete visit. Add the return walk, time at the viewpoint and time to park. The example below allows 75 minutes; it is a planning assumption, not a measured trail time.
Is parking free?
A current parking tariff and payment method have not been verified for this guide. Read the signs at the museum car park before setting off. Do not assume waterfall access, parking and museum admission are the same charge.
Can I walk behind the waterfall?
Katla Geopark describes a path behind the waterfall and warns of loose, slippery rock. Access depends on conditions and restrictions on the day. A view from the approach is a complete visit; never cross a barrier to reach the recess.
