Iceland in 10 Days: The Full Ring Road, Properly Paced

Ten days is the length most Ring Road veterans recommend: enough to circle Iceland's 1,322 km Route 1 with real time at the south coast, Jökulsárlón, the Eastfjords, and Mývatn — instead of watching them through a windscreen. Self-drive or private-guide, arranged as one quote.

This is a commercial package page of the Iceland.org agency: itineraries are quoted per date and group as line items, referral relationships are disclosed, and flights are never included. On any self-drive circuit, check road.is and the weather forecast every morning.

Pages are reviewed for practical usefulness, source quality, and volatile claims before publication.

Day 1 · Arrive & Reykjavík

Land, pick up the rental car (or meet your guide), and settle into Reykjavík. An easy first evening — the loop starts fresh tomorrow.

Day 2 · Golden Circle to the south coast

Þingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss, then drop south to overnight near Hella or Hvolsvöllur, positioned for the waterfall coast.

Day 3 · South Coast waterfalls to Vík

Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara — stay well back from the waterline; sneaker waves here are genuinely dangerous. Overnight around Vík.

Day 4 · Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach

Vatnajökull's glacier tongues, the iceberg lagoon at Jökulsárlón, and ice washed ashore on Diamond Beach. Optional glacier walk. Overnight near Höfn.

Day 5 · The Eastfjords

The quietest leg: the road threads in and out of deep fjords past villages like Djúpivogur and Seyðisfjörður, with a Stuðlagil Canyon detour if conditions allow. Overnight around Egilsstaðir.

Day 6 · Dettifoss & Lake Mývatn

Dettifoss — Europe's most powerful waterfall by volume — then Mývatn's volcanic surroundings: Dimmuborgir, the steaming Hverir field, and a geothermal soak.

Day 7 · Goðafoss, Akureyri & whale watching

Goðafoss sits right on Route 1 en route to Akureyri, the capital of the north. Optional whale watching from Húsavík or Akureyri. Overnight in town.

Day 8 · West toward Borgarfjörður

The long western leg, broken up by Hvítserkur sea stack, horse country in Skagafjörður, and the lava waterfalls at Hraunfossar. Overnight in Borgarfjörður.

Day 9 · Snæfellsnes Peninsula (optional)

The classic detour — 'Iceland in miniature': Kirkjufell, lava fields, and fishing villages. Prefer a slower pace? Use the day for Reykjavík instead.

Day 10 · Reykjavík & departure

Return the car, fit in a lagoon or a last museum, and transfer to the airport. Add nights on the quote if you want the Westfjords or highlands.

Planning the loop

Start with our Ring Road driving guide for region-by-region distances and seasonal advice — it's the reference this itinerary is paced against. Deeper reading for the legs you're most excited about: Diamond Beach, the Eastfjords, North Iceland, and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Shorter on time? The 5-day package keeps the Golden Circle and south coast without the full circuit, and the all-inclusive package trades driving for guided day tours from Reykjavík.
