Ten Days Around Iceland: Ring Road With Selective Detours
Ten calendar days can support a Ring Road trip, but they do not make every detour fit. Treat arrival and departure separately, assign the overnight locations, then choose which visits matter most.

Day 2 · Golden Circle toward the south
Select stops and overnight near the southern route, with actual hotel location confirmed.
Day 3 · South Coast to Vík area
Choose waterfall and coastal stops. Follow current Reynisfjara access warnings.
Day 4 · Southeast toward Höfn
Choose between a substantial guided activity and a fuller sightseeing day around Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón.
Day 5 · Eastfjords toward Egilsstaðir
Follow the coastal route with selected stops. Seyðisfjörður is a separate detour; do not treat it as a through-route village.
Day 6 · Toward Mývatn
Choose the detours that fit. For Dettifoss, check the correct access road and current conditions.
Day 7 · North Iceland toward Akureyri
Combine selected stops with a booked activity only if its meeting point fits. Húsavík requires additional travel.
Day 8 · West Iceland
Allow the cross-country drive and choose limited stops rather than adding every western detour.
Day 9 · Flexible western day and airport-side return
Consider a local West Iceland visit or return toward Reykjavík. Include Snæfellsnes only if the full route and flight timing support it.
Day 10 · Departure
Allow fuel or charging, rental return if relevant, transfer and airline check-in.
Separate the main road from your detours
Seyðisfjörður, Stuðlagil, Húsavík and Snæfellsnes can all add worthwhile visits, but they are not stops you automatically pass on Route 1. Plot the extra driving, walking and activity check-in for each. The Ring Road planning guide explains the usable-day calculation.
On the southeast day, a booked glacier walk competes for time with Skaftafell walks and Jökulsárlón. Choose the exact excursion and its meeting point before deciding what else to include. Use the park’s current route information if a walking trail is closed.
Two toll systems need different handling
The road authority announced a September 2026 toll for the new Hornafjörður section of Route 1. For rental vehicles, Spölur’s instructions provide a 12-hour payment window after passage before collection goes to the rental company.
That differs from Vaðlaheiðargöng’s system near Akureyri. Check both in the rental and road-cost guide; one payment does not cover the other.
Leave the final approach to the airport manageable
Use the last full day according to where you slept, current conditions and your flight the following day. Do not make a distant peninsula circuit compulsory just to fill a ten-day list.
The overnight regions below are illustrative. An offer should identify actual hotels, vehicle or guide arrangements, activities and who handles changes. Compare self-drive support terms before assuming a package covers disruption costs.

Is ten days automatically enough for an unhurried Ring Road trip?
No. Flight times, season, driving comfort, walks and detours determine the pace. Ten calendar days may leave eight full days between arrival and departure.
Should I include Snæfellsnes as well?
Only if the driving and overnight plan leaves time for it. The final full day can also provide useful flexibility or a shorter West Iceland visit. Add a night if the peninsula is a priority.
Are Seyðisfjörður and Húsavík on Route 1?
No. Both require deliberate detours. Include the access road and return or onward journey when deciding whether a visit or tour fits.
Can a winter circuit follow this exact schedule?
Do not assume so. Assess daylight, forecasts, road conditions and flexibility for the dates. A suitable vehicle or guided booking does not override closures.
