# West Iceland: Borgarfjörður, Reykholt and Húsafell

Use Borgarfjörður for a mix of historical sites, waterfalls and booked activities. A day of short visits is different from one built around a cave or glacier excursion; choose the activity first, then fill the remaining time.

## Choose a base for the next morning

[Borgarnes](<https://www.iceland.org/cities/borgarnes>) can suit a route continuing north or toward Snæfellsnes. A stay around Húsafell can suit an early activity departure farther inland. Compare the actual accommodation address and meeting point instead of assuming every West Iceland hotel is near every attraction.

The [Snæfellsnes Peninsula](<https://www.iceland.org/snaefellsnes>) and [Westfjords](<https://www.iceland.org/westfjords>) have their own routes. Adding them changes the journey; they are not spare stops to attach to a full Borgarfjörður day.

## In Reykholt, distinguish the grounds from the exhibition

[Snorrastofa](<https://www.snorrastofa.is/en/>) is a cultural and medieval center in Reykholt. Its exhibition and visitor services provide context for Snorri Sturluson and the site. Decide whether you want an outdoor look, exhibition time or a separately arranged guided visit.

When checked September 10, 2026, visitor reception listed daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. opening for May–August, but weekdays only during September–April; other visits are by arrangement. A winter weekend itinerary therefore needs confirmation before making the exhibition its anchor. Do not assume an outdoor historical site and an indoor reception share the same access.

## Choose the bathing experience you want

[Krauma](<https://www.krauma.is/en>), beside Deildartunguhver, is a managed bath facility. Its inspected tariff lists adults seventeen and over at 7,900 ISK and towel rental separately at 1,400 ISK. The source hot spring is not a place to bathe directly; use the visitor paths and the purpose-built baths.

[Húsafell Canyon Baths](<https://www.husafell.com/activities/husafell-canyon-baths>) is a guided excursion with transport and an approach walk. The operator lists sixty-four steps down to the baths and includes a towel. That is a different access arrangement from driving to a spa entrance; ask about the complete route for anyone with mobility needs.

The Canyon Baths listing offers a 1-hour-45-minute tour and says the walking route can change with conditions. Compare total excursion time, travel to the meeting point and the time you want in the water before adding another fixed booking.

## A cave visit and a glacier tunnel need their own reservations

For a [lava-cave visit](<https://www.iceland.org/caves>), compare the named tour, departure time and physical requirements. For the constructed Langjökull tunnel, use the [ice-tour comparison](<https://www.iceland.org/tours/ice-caves>) to distinguish it from a natural glacier cave.

[Into the Glacier’s Klaki instructions](<https://intotheglacier.is/information/arriving-klaki-base-camp/>) distinguish Klaki from Húsafell departures. Follow the transfer and check-in on your reservation; a Húsafell hotel address does not mean every glacier ticket starts there.

Leave the time around a booked excursion for visits such as [Hraunfossar](<https://www.iceland.org/waterfall/hraunfossar>) and the surrounding valley. Allow for paths and parking rather than treating each place as a momentary roadside stop.

## Main-road access does not settle every route choice

Check [current road conditions](<https://umferdin.is/en>) and your rental agreement before choosing an inland connection. Our [rental guide](<https://www.iceland.org/car-rental>) explains why restrictions can apply beyond roads with an F prefix. Do not accept a map shortcut as vehicle permission.

For winter, leave room to change the day and confirm each indoor venue’s opening. For summer, avoid filling every daylight hour with driving. The value of an overnight here is the time it creates for the activity or historical visit you chose.

## Questions about West Iceland: Borgarfjörður, Reykholt and Húsafell

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Can I see West Iceland in one day from Reykjavík?**

You can select a day’s route, but waterfalls, historical visits, baths and a glacier excursion do not all have to fit. Choose the priority and use its actual duration and meeting point to build the day.

**Is Snorrastofa open every day in winter?**

The inspected September–April visitor-reception schedule is weekdays 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with other visits by arrangement. Confirm the date before planning a weekend exhibition visit.

**Can I drive straight to Húsafell Canyon Baths?**

The inspected product is a guided excursion including transport and a walking approach with sixty-four steps down to the baths. Follow the operator’s meeting instructions and confirm suitability.

**Do all Langjökull tunnel tickets depart from Húsafell?**

No. The operator distinguishes Húsafell and Klaki arrangements. Use the transfer, meeting point and check-in stated on the actual reservation.
