Region

Northwest Iceland

Best time: June – August

## Quick Answer

Vesturdalur runs from Skagafjörður deep into the central highlands, a narrow, sparsely inhabited valley with the Vestari-Jökulsá river.

The Vestari-Jökulsá river flows through this narrow, remote valley. Steep mountains rise on both sides, and there are few signs of modern habitation.

### Vestari-Jökulsá River

## How to Get There

- Identify your specific destination inland from Skagafjörður before choosing the approach road
- Allow driving time for the actual valley destination as well as the journey to Skagafjörður
- The road is gravel and becomes rougher further into the valley, so check conditions
- Varmahlíð has fuel, accommodation, and a supermarket for supplies
- Can be combined with Skagafjörður valley and horse riding excursions

## Best Time to Visit

- June-August: Best access conditions on gravel roads, wildflowers, midnight sun
- July: Longer daylight for planning, with road conditions still requiring a check
- September: Fewer visitors and autumn colors in the valley
- October-May: Upper valley road may be impassable; check with locals
- Snowmelt can delay road and trail access; do not infer an opening date from the month

## Looking for Hljóðaklettar?

The Echo Rocks are in a different Vesturdalur. [Vatnajökull National Park](<https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/areas/jokulsargljufur/hljodaklettar>) places Hljóðaklettar in Jökulsárgljúfur, about 15 km south of Ásbyrgi, beside Jökulsá á Fjöllum. Searching only for “Vesturdalur” can therefore send you to the wrong part of North Iceland.

Use “Vesturdalur, Skagafjörður” when planning for the valley described here. If your aim is Hljóðaklettar’s basalt formations, use the park’s named destination and marked walking routes instead. Its parking and trail information does not describe access from Skagafjörður.
