# Þjórsárdalur: the original Stöng site, reconstructed farm and waterfalls

Þjórsárdalur brings together archaeological remains, a reconstructed medieval farm and waterfall walks. Use separate map points for the original Stöng site and the Commonwealth Farm.

## Two places explain one story

The Commonwealth Farm is a reconstruction based on the excavated farmhouse at Stöng, which was buried by volcanic material in 1104. The original archaeological site is elsewhere in the valley. Visiting the reconstruction helps explain the building’s layout; visiting Stöng puts the remains in their original setting.

## The reconstruction has its own visiting season

The operator’s published schedule, checked September 10, 2026, is daily May 1–October 15, 10:00–17:30. Adult admission is listed at 2,500 ISK. Check before traveling near the season’s end; outdoor access elsewhere in the valley does not imply the staffed attraction is open.

## Choose waterfall stops by their approaches

Read about Hjálparfoss in the regional guide and use the [Háifoss](<https://www.iceland.org/waterfall/haifoss>) guides to compare the walks and roads. Add [Gjáin](<https://www.iceland.org/waterfall/gjain>) only after checking its approach and current restrictions. Nearby points on a map can still require different roads, parking places and walking time.
