# Skriðdalur: Þingmúli and the inland route through East Iceland

Skriðdalur is an inland East Iceland valley whose geography is easiest to understand at Þingmúli, where the land divides into Norðurdalur and Suðurdalur.

## Find Þingmúli first

Visit Austurland’s Múlakollur description identifies Þingmúli as the hill dividing the two branches of Skriðdalur. Its name recalls the historic assembly place. Use this landmark to orient yourself, rather than treating the valley as a coastal stop in Djúpivogur.

## Separate old Ring Road descriptions from current routing

Older descriptions of the route through Suðurdalur can call it Road 1. The regional guide now identifies the crossing through Breiðdalur and Breiðdalsheiði toward Egilsstaðir as Route 95, an alternative to the Ring Road. Check [the road map](<https://umferdin.is/en>) for the actual route and conditions before committing to a mountain crossing.

## Choose a named walk

Múlakollur has its own published regional trail description. Read the approach and conditions for that walk before setting out. A farm track or sheep trail on a valley slope is not enough information to plan an ascent. Pair an inland visit with [Breiðdalur](<https://www.iceland.org/valleys/breiddalur>) only when the connecting route fits the weather and your day.
