Öxnadalur lies on the Ring Road west of Akureyri. The mountain scenery is visible from the valley, but reaching Hraunsvatn is a separate walking excursion.

## The published Hraunsvatn route

Visit North Iceland lists a marked route from Hraun farm to Hraunsvatn, with a 3–4-hour duration and a medium difficulty rating. The surface includes soil, stones and grass, and there are steps or ledges to negotiate. Use that allowance for a hike rather than squeezing it into the time for a roadside photograph.

## A literary landscape with a specific story

The regional trail account connects the area with poet Jónas Hallgrímsson and records that his father drowned in Hraunsvatn in 1816. Hraundrangur forms the mountain backdrop. The lake trail is the described outing; it is not a route to climb the rock pinnacle.

## Access through a working landscape

The trail description directs visitors to parking by Hraun and an approach through the farmyard. Follow current signs and keep access clear. Check [Öxnadalsheiði road conditions](<https://umferdin.is/en>) as part of the wider drive, and assess snow, wind and visibility separately before walking uphill. A road being passable does not establish trail conditions.
