# Hvannadalur: distinguish the Literary Walk from the longer valley hike

Hvannadalur in southeast Iceland appears in walking accounts connected with the countryside near Hali. It needs more route planning than a quick stop at the nearby glacier lagoons.

## The Literary Walk and the extension are different journeys

In his firsthand account, photographer Kaspars Dzenis describes the Literary Walk ending at Klukkugill. He estimates 1–2 hours for that first section and another 4–5 hours for an extension into Hvannadalur. These are his route estimates, not current official trail timings; do not budget the entire valley visit as a short walk.

## Confirm the approach locally

The same account describes a rough approach across Steinasandir with river crossings. It is not a current access clearance. Before leaving the main road, ask a local guide or Hali for the present approach, permission, parking and river conditions. If those cannot be established, choose a documented walk elsewhere.

## Meet the writer at Hali

The [Þórbergur center at Hali](<https://hali.is/>) is dedicated to Þórbergur Þórðarson, who grew up on the farm. That is the literary connection here. Hali also offers regional maps and local information at reception, a useful starting point for understanding the area before planning a more remote outing.
