# Fagridalur: the Ring Road between Egilsstaðir and Reyðarfjörður

Fagridalur is the inland valley on the Ring Road between Egilsstaðir and Reyðarfjörður. It is useful to understand this link before choosing which East Fjords detours to add.

## Follow the current road, then choose a fjord

Visit Austurland’s Fjord to Fjord route places the Fagridalur drive on the Ring Road. From Reyðarfjörður, its itinerary continues east toward Eskifjörður and through the tunnel to Neskaupstaður. These are additional destinations beyond the valley; leave time for the return or onward coastal drive.

## A mountain walk is a separate outing

Höttur rises between Fagridalur and Vellir. The regional trail description starts at a sign by Road 1 east of Gilsá, then follows Grjótá toward Víðihjalli and Hattarhólar. Use that named trail description to plan a mountain outing; a view from the valley road does not identify a safe ascent.

## Build the drive around conditions

Keep the driving leg separate from your walking time. Check [current road conditions](<https://umferdin.is/en>) before crossing and choose a signed stopping place away from traffic. The current Visit Austurland itinerary places Fagridalur on the Ring Road, Route 1. Older references to Route 92 should not be used to plan this section.

No. Neskaupstaður is a further journey beyond Reyðarfjörður and Eskifjörður. Add it as a separate stop with its own driving time.
