# Bárðardalur: plan Goðafoss and Aldeyjarfoss as separate stops

Bárðardalur follows the Skjálfandafljót river inland in North Iceland. Its two well-known waterfalls occupy different parts of a journey: Goðafoss by the main road and Aldeyjarfoss farther up the valley.

## Goðafoss is the short-stop option

Start with the [Goðafoss guide](<https://www.iceland.org/waterfall/godafoss>) if you are traveling the Ring Road and have limited time. A stop there does not mean you have driven the length of Bárðardalur. Decide how much of the inland detour fits before continuing south.

## Aldeyjarfoss shows a different river setting

Visit North Iceland places Aldeyjarfoss near the upper end of Bárðardalur and Sprengisandur. Its distinction is the basalt-column setting around Skjálfandafljót. The regional listing identifies Road 842, but that broad reference is not a guarantee that every part of your chosen approach is suitable for your car. Check the complete route and current restrictions.

## Continuing to the highlands changes the trip

For Sprengisandsleið and [Nýidalur](<https://www.iceland.org/valleys/nyidalur>), FÍ specifies summer access by 4×4 on F26, with opening dependent on conditions. Treat a highland crossing as a separate itinerary with vehicle suitability, accommodation and current road status settled before departure. Do not infer F26 access from an open road to a valley farm.
