Systrafoss Waterfall in Iceland: Height, Flow, Location and Tours

One of the most lovely waterfalls in Iceland is known as the Systrafoss Waterfall. The Systrafoss Waterfall in Iceland is unique in its kind as it falls as two equal waterfalls. It seems like two pure white majestic white waterfalls that fall like rivers down the slope of the mountain. 

Systrafoss is found in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, which is in the South of Iceland. The beautiful white water ribbons slide down the bedrock before they crash into moss-covered boulders and tumble down a little more chaotically. 

To find the waterfall, you need to drive east from Vík í Mýrdal and in the direction of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Just before you exit the roundabout, you’ll already be able to see Systrafoss in the distance on the left (GPS 63.784099, -18.047958).

There is a parking area near a cafe just after the Systrafoss waterfalls.

Once you arrive at the parking spot for the falls, you will already have stumbled upon the beginning of your adventure. This is because the trailhead to the top of the Systrafoss Waterfall is located just there. On the left side, there’s a trail that ascends about 50-60 meters with a fantastic viewpoint. From there, you can enjoy the amazing view of the valley that lies below. 

You can also walk to a sirene lake, the lake Systravatn. 

At the base of the falls, a small trail passes a lovely picnic area and there is also a small natural bridge. This area is a treat for the imagination as you can picture many of the natural elements being part of a fairytale story. 

Another interesting hike takes you to the Singing Cave otherwise known as Sönghellirinn.
