# Skaftafell Trails: Vatnajökull National Park Hub

Updated September 10, 2026 · [Published by Iceland.org](<https://www.iceland.org/about-us>) · [Writing & review](<https://www.iceland.org/editorial-policy#credits>)

Skaftafell works as a base for several different kinds of walk: a waterfall circuit, a glacier viewpoint or a long mountain day. Choose the route first, then decide whether it fits the weather, your group and the time you have.

**September 2026 access notice:** [Austurbrekkur is closed September 1–30](<https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/warnings/temporary-closure-of-austurbrekkur-in-skaftafell>) for maintenance, according to the park’s August 20 notice, checked September 10. Ask at the visitor centre which circuits are available. Do not improvise a bypass around the work zone.

## Compare the numbered routes

| Route | Park listing | Decision |
| --- | --- | --- |
| S2: Svartifoss–Sjónarsker–Sel | 5.8 km circuit; about 2 hours; easy | A waterfall and cultural-landscape walk. This distance is for the full circuit. |
| S5: Sjónarnípa | 6.5 km; 2–2.5 hours; challenging | Allow more effort than the distance alone suggests. |
| S6: Svartifoss–Sjónarnípa | 7.1 km; 2.5–3 hours; challenging | Combines two destinations; confirm the connecting paths are open. |
| S4: Kristínartindar | 18 km; 6–8 hours; difficult | A mountain day requiring a separate weather and fitness decision. |

These are the [park’s published route figures](<https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/areas/skaftafell>), checked September 10, 2026. They are planning estimates, not completion targets. Follow the current route map and signs; a familiar destination name can appear on several different walks.

## Before leaving the visitor centre

Confirm the trail you intend to follow and its return route. Check that you have enough daylight for your pace and stops. Bring food, water and clothing for the whole walk; do not extend a short waterfall outing onto a mountain route simply because the junction is nearby.

Skaftafell is reached from Route 1. The visitor centre and campsite operate year-round, while some other services are seasonal. Parking, camping and commercial tours are separate purchases. If you have a glacier excursion booked, use the operator’s exact meeting point and arrival time rather than assuming every tour starts at the visitor centre.

Planning help

## Questions before you go

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Which Skaftafell trail should I choose?**

Use the park’s numbered routes: S2 links Svartifoss, Sjónarsker and Sel over 5.8 km; S4 Kristínartindar is an 18 km difficult mountain route. Confirm available routes with the visitor centre because closures can affect a planned circuit.

**Is any trail closed in September 2026?**

The park announced that Austurbrekkur is closed September 1–30, 2026 for maintenance. This is a specific trail closure, not a closure of all Skaftafell. Check the current park notice before setting out.

**Can I walk onto a glacier from the hiking trails?**

A walk to a glacier viewpoint is separate from a guided glacier excursion. Stay on the designated land trail. Book glacier travel with an operator and confirm its meeting point and equipment requirements.

**Is Skaftafell accessible year-round?**

The park lists the visitor centre and campsite as open year-round. Road, weather and trail conditions still determine what you can do on a given day; a summer route description is not a winter access guarantee.
