# Golden Circle Iceland: Route, Stops and Time Planner

Put your return deadline into the plan before adding detours. Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss are the core stops; the time you spend walking, eating and preparing at each one matters as much as the drive.

## Start with the three main stops

Use the schematic for orientation, then check a current road map for your exact starting point and detours. It is not live navigation.

What to decide at each stop

| Stop | Visit choice | Before arrival |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Þingvellir](<https://www.iceland.org/national-parks/thingvellir>) | A short viewpoint visit or a longer walk through the park. | Choose the car park and route, and check park access and payment instructions. |
| [Geysir geothermal area](<https://www.iceland.org/geysers/geysir>) | Time around Strokkur, with a separate meal if wanted. | Use marked paths and respect barriers; do not build timing around an exact eruption interval. |
| [Gullfoss](<https://www.iceland.org/waterfall/gullfoss>) | The viewpoints that are open and suitable for your party. | Check conditions and steps/gradients for the particular path rather than assuming every platform is accessible. |

Read the [Þingvellir visitor information](<https://www.thingvellir.is/en/>) and [Visit South Iceland’s Gullfoss page](<https://www.south.is/en/place/gullfoss>) when choosing the actual stops.

## Build a full-day or shortened plan

## Does your day have room for the stops?

Start with this example, then replace the drive estimates with your route and the stop times with what you want to do. Set a stop to zero if you will pass it without visiting; the drive remains in the total.

All times below are illustrative planning inputs, not live traffic, road access or measured journey times. Check daylight for your date and location before choosing an end time. A positive remainder does not establish that the trip is safe or feasible.

Total: **495 minutes**. Calculated finish: **16:15**.

105 minutes remain before the end time you chose.

[Check the weather](<https://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/areas/>) and [road conditions](<https://umferdin.is/en>) before departure. Add any detour driving to the relevant leg.

The planner’s example totals 495 minutes (8 hours 15 minutes), including travel, stops, lunch and buffer. It is an arithmetic example, not a measured journey or a prediction for your date. Replace its assumptions with your own; the printable version uses the same example.

Choose scope before choosing departure time

| Available day | Suggested approach | What to leave out first |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A full day with a flexible return | Budget the three main stops, food and a separate margin. | Add a detour only after its extra drive and visit time fit. |
| A short day or fixed afternoon commitment | Choose fewer stops and calculate the return from the last one. | Do not squeeze the entire loop into a shorter window by deleting all the buffer. |
| Short daylight or difficult conditions | Choose a smaller route compatible with current guidance. | Remove exposed walks or postpone the road day if conditions do not suit. |

Changing direction can help a booking fit, but this guide has no visitor-count evidence that reversing the loop reliably avoids crowds.

## Stop-by-stop planning notes

The shared notes below also appear in the printable itinerary. Driving values are provisional planning assumptions; confirm the actual route and conditions.

### Stop 1: Þingvellir National Park

Reykjavík → Þingvellir · Route 36 · ~49 km · ~45 min

Allow 1-2 hours

Choose the actual route through Þingvellir, with time for the viewpoint or a longer walk. Check the park map and path conditions before deciding how much to include.

Check the national park’s current parking rates, payment instructions and facilities. Confirm any parking-card exemption with the park rather than assuming registration is automatic.

### Stop 2: Geysir Geothermal Area

Þingvellir → Geysir · Routes 365, 37, 35 · ~60 km · ~50 min

Allow 30-60 minutes

Allow time at the geothermal area without promising a particular eruption interval. Stay on marked paths and respect barriers around hot water and steam.

Confirm current entry and parking instructions. Check the actual business and its opening hours if you plan to stop for food, fuel or facilities.

### Stop 3: Gullfoss Waterfall

Geysir → Gullfoss · Route 35 · ~10 km · ~10 min

Allow 30-60 minutes

Choose the open viewpoints suitable for your party, rather than assuming you must visit every platform. Leave time to return to the vehicle.

Confirm current charges, path conditions and facilities. Ask about the particular route’s steps and gradients if access needs affect your visit.

### Return leg (with optional stops)

Gullfoss → Reykjavík · Routes 35, 1 · ~120 km · ~1 hr 45 min

Budget each detour separately

Head back south on Route 35. Possible detours on the return journey include: Faxi waterfall, Friðheimar tomato farm near Reykholt, the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir, and Kerið crater. Join Route 1 at Selfoss for the drive west back to Reykjavík.

Choose a named food/fuel or charging stop on your final route and confirm its service and hours. Include the detour and stop in the return budget.

## Verify parking, meals and access separately

- Budget for each actual parking area and optional activity; a free-entry statement is not a parking quote.
- For Þingvellir, read the current park instructions and keep proof of payment. Ask how any parking-card exemption must be registered.
- For food or charging, select a named business on your chosen route and confirm its hours and service. An old town-level list does not establish that it can meet your needs.
- Ask each site about the exact entrance, path surface, stairs and toilets you need. Winter conditions can change the usefulness of an otherwise suitable path.

Compare a guided departure with the full self-drive cost and effort, including vehicle, fuel/charging, parking and the ability of everyone in your party to enjoy the day. See [Golden Circle tour options](<https://www.iceland.org/tours/golden-circle>) for the commercial decision.

## Add one detour for a clear reason

- [Kerið](<https://www.iceland.org/craters/kerid>) if a crater visit is a priority: check entry and the route you plan to walk.
- [Secret Lagoon](<https://www.iceland.org/hot-springs/secret-lagoon>) if bathing matters more than another viewpoint: include changing, admission and any booking deadline.
- [Faxi](<https://www.iceland.org/waterfall/faxi>) if you want a waterfall stop that fits your actual return route.

A detour budget includes leaving the main route, parking, the visit and rejoining the journey. Do not add the same 15-minute allowance to very different activities.

## Check the route before you leave

Use [official road conditions](<https://umferdin.is/en>), [weather warnings](<https://en.vedur.is/>) and [SafeTravel’s driving guidance](<https://safetravel.is/driving/>). Confirm rental permission, tires and your own ability for the conditions. A paved road is not a guarantee that the day’s plan is suitable.

Planning help

## Planning questions

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**How long does the Golden Circle take?**

Calculate your whole day, not only driving time. The planner example is 495 minutes including stops, food and buffer; replace the assumptions for your own route.

**Which direction avoids crowds?**

Choose the order for your starting point, bookings and return plan. This guide does not have evidence that reversing the loop reliably avoids crowds.

**Is the route wheelchair accessible?**

Check the exact paths, entrances and facilities at each stop with the site. Do not assume every viewpoint is accessible or usable in winter conditions.

**Can I do it in winter?**

That depends on the actual weather, roads, vehicle and your experience. Use official conditions information and shorten or postpone the plan when needed.
