# Þverárjökull: Several North Iceland Glaciers Share This Name

Þverárjökull is not a unique glacier name. The USGS reference lists several features in North Iceland under it, so a trip description needs a valley or mountain name before it can identify the intended place.

## The main name matches

The reference includes mountain glaciers at the head of Þverárdalur in Skíðadalur, a glacier in upper Bakkadalur in Svarfaðardalur, cirque glaciers north of Auðnasýling, and another mountain glacier south of Rimar in Þorvaldsdalur. These are separate geographic entries.

## How to resolve a map or tour description

Ask which Þverárdalur, which neighboring peak and which approach are intended. Eastern and western qualifiers occur in the Skíðadalur entry. A bare “Þverárjökull” search result or coordinate is insufficient to choose a route.

## Why there is no single driving pin here

Select the intended valley and mountain first, then use a current map to identify the approach. A general F-road direction would not resolve which glacier you were traveling toward.

## Glacier questions

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Does Þverárjökull identify one glacier?**

Þverárjökull is not a unique glacier name.

**Does this page provide a current route onto the glacier?**

No. Glacier identification and historical photographs do not establish current access. Check official conditions and get advice for the exact route; use the operator’s confirmed meeting point for a guided activity.
