# Köldukvíslarjökull: Vatnajökull’s Northwestern Outlet

Köldukvíslarjökull is a broad outlet on the northwestern margin of Vatnajökull. Its glacier type and position help distinguish it from neighboring outlets; they do not make it a routine stop from the Sprengisandur road.

## A broad, surge-type outlet

The USGS reference describes a lobed glacier front and records Köldukvíslarjökull as surge-type. It traces the name to the Kaldakvísl river. Its aerial and satellite illustrations place the outlet in relation to Bárðarbunga, Hamarinn and neighboring ice basins.

## Use dated measurements, not interchangeable numbers

Glacier area, margin position and elevation depend on the observation date and boundary definition. The historical reference identifies the outlet but does not establish its 2026 dimensions. A glacier can also redistribute ice during a surge, so a local advance and the ice cap’s long-term mass change are different questions.

## A route must be verified on its own

Do not infer a passable approach from a nearby highland road on a map. Confirm the exact road or track, vehicle permission and present conditions before planning a visit. Check communications, equipment and rescue planning for the particular route; a regional coverage or seasonal label is too broad for an expedition.
