# Fláajökull: a Retreating Outlet Near Höfn

A rapidly retreating Vatnajökull outlet glacier in southeast Iceland. Its growing proglacial lagoon shows the retreat plainly, and it is far quieter than the well-known glacier sites.

Region

Southeast Iceland

Near Höfn. Quiet glacier viewing with few visitors.

Few places show glacial retreat as plainly as Fláajökull. This Vatnajökull outlet glacier has been retreating faster than most of its neighbors and has left behind a lagoon that grows larger each year. There are none of Jökulsárlón's crowds here; you can watch the retreating ice in near-solitude, a short drive from the fishing town of Höfn.

Do not approach the glacier face or walk on the ice. The proglacial lagoon edges can be unstable. Gravel roads may be rough; drive carefully.

The [F1 historical trail](<https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/areas/heinaberg/f1-soguslod-sunnan-flaajokuls>) is an easy loop from Fláajökull car park, listed at 1–2 hours. The park’s overview gives 2.6 km, while the individual trail page gives 3.6 km; confirm the distance on the current trail sign. [F2](<https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/areas/heinaberg/f2-jar%C3%B0fraedislod-austan-flaajokuls>) covers geology and is graded challenging, at 3.6 km and about two hours.

Do not assume you can continue all the way to Heinabergslón: the [park overview](<https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/en/areas/heinaberg/destination-flaajokull>) says the J2 connection has no bridge across Hólmsá and recommends against crossing it. Plan the two glacier visits as separate approaches.
