# Barkárdalsjökull and Tungnahryggsjökull: Understanding the Names

Barkárdalsjökull is the glacier at the head of Barkárdalur in Tröllaskagi. The important complication is its relationship to Tungnahryggsjökull: the names can refer to different parts of a connected glacier system.

## Why maps use more than one name

The USGS reference describes Barkárdalsjökull as a cirque glacier belonging to the compound Tungnahryggsjökull glacier. It records Barkárjökull as an alternative name and explains that local usage can apply Tungnahryggsjökull to the whole connected glacier across the divide toward Kolbeinsdalur.

## Match the valley as well as the glacier

When comparing a map, photograph or trip description, look for Barkárdalur and the side of the divide being described. A result for Langjökull or Breiðamerkurjökull is about a different place. A general North Iceland itinerary through Mývatn or Goðafoss does not supply an approach to this glacier.

## What remains to check for a visit

The historical name record does not verify a current trail, road, guide service or snow-free season. This page therefore does not give a driving pin or promise that a July or August visit is possible. Confirm the exact route and conditions with a local mountain professional before planning to approach the ice.
