# Daníelslundur: A Forest Stop by Route 1 in Borgarfjörður

Daníelslundur sits by Route 1 in Borgarfjörður. It suits a break from driving: the [forestry association’s account](<https://www.skogargatt.is/danielslundur>) describes parking at the forest edge, walking paths and clearings with tables and benches.

## A roadside stop with a choice of paths

Park in the forest’s designated area rather than stopping on Route 1. You can keep the visit to a picnic and short walk, or follow a longer route. [Visit West Iceland](<https://www.west.is/en/place/danielslundur-forestry>) lists a 3.74-kilometre walk, graded easy to moderate, with steps on some paths and no lighting.

The woodland has views across Borgarfjörður when visibility permits. Give yourself time to return before dark; proximity to the highway does not make every forest path a short or level loop.

## Who was Daníel?

The forest is named for Daníel Kristjánsson, a Hreðavatn forest ranger and leader in the Borgarfjörður Forestry Association. The association began planting here in 1961; the name changed in 1978 to honor his seventieth birthday. Its 2002 opening under the Open Forest program was a later milestone, not the start of the planting.

The association asks visitors to follow paths and protect the vegetation. The planted woodland is still a place of ongoing care, so use the established clearings for breaks.
