# Driving Snæfellsnes: Coastal Stops, Cave Visits and Overnight Choices

A day from Reykjavík works best with a short list of priorities. An overnight stay gives you room for both coasts, a walk and a timed cave visit. Start with those choices before drawing a complete loop.

## Trace the coast, then check every shortcut

From Borgarnes, Route 54 leads toward the peninsula. The western coastal circuit also uses Route 574; Route 54 alone does not describe every coastal stop. Plot the actual parking entrances for Arnarstapi, Djúpalónssandur and Kirkjufell, then add the transfer back to your accommodation.

Keep Route 570, the glacier-area road, separate from the coastal plan. Rental permission is specific to the vehicle and contract: [Blue’s terms](<https://www.bluecarrental.is/useful-information/terms/terms-and-conditions/>), for example, restrict road 570 for vehicles outside its permitted category. Do not accept a navigation shortcut without checking both the road and your agreement.

Use [Umferðin](<https://umferdin.is/en>) for current access. Strong wind or a closed segment can change the choice between coasts; a summer date does not guarantee every optional road is open.

## Choose what the day is for

**Coast and walking:** make Arnarstapi your main walking stop, then select Búðir or a western park stop according to your route. Decide whether a coast walk is out-and-back or needs transport at its other end.

**Cave and national park:** reserve the cave departure first and arrange the western stops around its check-in. Leave room to reach the meeting point without cutting a beach or cliff visit short.

**North-coast towns and Kirkjufell:** give Grundarfjörður or Stykkishólmur time beyond the car park. A café, harbour walk or museum visit is easier to enjoy when another coast is not already overdue.

For one day, choose one of these as the main purpose and add only the stops your calculated return allows. For an overnight, a south-coast and western-park day followed by a north-coast day is one possible outline. Reverse it when bookings or conditions favour the other direction.

## Vatnshellir needs a guide and a departure time

The [national park’s Vatnshellir page](<https://snaefellsjokull.is/en/hiking-trails-destinations/vatnshellir>) says visits are guided and identifies Summit Adventure Guides as the operator. Access includes a spiral staircase. Check the operator’s current booking page for the meeting point, age requirements, equipment and suitability for anyone who has difficulty with stairs.

Do not use the old price or assume hourly departures from this guide’s previous version. Save the actual reservation and arrival instructions. If stairs make this unsuitable, use the park’s visitor centres and surface walks instead of assuming an accessible cave entrance.

## Keep the glacier separate from the sightseeing loop

Seeing Snæfellsjökull from the coast does not involve going onto its ice. A glacier activity needs its own suitable operator, conditions and time allocation. It is not an incidental stop between beaches.

Jules Verne used Snæfellsjökull in *Journey to the Centre of the Earth*. The literary connection is a reason to learn about the mountain, not a description of a visitor route into it.

Use our [Snæfellsnes regional guide](<https://www.iceland.org/snaefellsnes>) to choose destinations, then check each site’s current parking and access information. Keep a weather alternative near your overnight town.

The [park’s current FAQ](<https://snaefellsjokull.is/en/education/faq>) describes a parking-based service fee valid park-wide until midnight. Check the signs for payment; this does not include commercial cave entry or parking outside the park.

Planning help

## Planning questions

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Is the whole loop on Route 54?**

No. Western coastal stops also use Route 574 and local access roads. Inspect the actual route rather than relying on the phrase “Route 54 loop.”

**Can I enter Vatnshellir without a tour?**

The national park says the cave can only be visited with a guide. It names Summit Adventure Guides as the operator; check current departures and suitability before booking.

**Should I stay overnight?**

An overnight allows more time for both coasts, walking and a timed activity. For a day from Reykjavík, select fewer stops and include the full return drive in your plan.
