## Essential Driving Tips for Iceland

Write down the start, finish and overnight location. Add sightseeing, meals and any booked check-in times to the driving estimate. A map’s moving time is only one part of the day.

SafeTravel warns that winter conditions can also occur in spring and autumn and that navigation tools may miss closures.

**What should I check before choosing a highland route?**

Check the exact road numbers, current road status, your vehicle’s suitability and the rental company’s permission. Some highland roads have unbridged rivers. A 4x4 booking does not establish that a crossing or route is safe.

**Can I drive these routes in winter?**

Choose the route using current weather and road conditions, daylight and the driver’s experience. Have a shorter alternative. A year-round road connection is not a guarantee that every section will be passable on your date.

**Where should I plan fuel or charging stops?**

Identify operating stops on the actual route and a fallback before departure. Check the fuel or connector type and payment method. Avoid planning from a generic distance between stations.

**How do I approach a single-lane bridge?**

Slow down and check oncoming traffic. SafeTravel says the vehicle closer to the bridge has priority, while also warning drivers to assess what the other driver intends. Wait if another vehicle is already crossing.
