# Eldborg Crater: The Fire Fortress of West Iceland

Updated September 10, 2026 · [Published by Iceland.org](<https://www.iceland.org/about-us>) · [Writing & review](<https://www.iceland.org/editorial-policy#credits>)

Eldborg rises above the lava fields near the southern approach to Snæfellsnes. Its steep crater walls make it look close and compact from the road, but reaching them involves a longer walk. Start at Snorrastaðir, rather than looking for an informal pull-off beside the crater.

## The walk from Snorrastaðir

[Visit West Iceland’s trail record](<https://www.west.is/en/place/eldborg-crater-walking-trail>) gives a length of 6.64 km and describes lava, rocks and high steps. Markings are sparse in places. Chains assist the final ascent and descent. The record labels the route easy, but its terrain notes matter more when deciding whether it suits your group.

Choose a turnaround time before leaving and keep enough time for the return over the same rough ground. A view of the crater does not mean you have reached the start of a short paved climb. Keep children close on the ascent and do not improvise a rim circuit if the established route or conditions do not support it.

## What you are looking at

The tourism board describes the crater as rising roughly 60 metres above the lava field, with steep walls and a deep interior. It has been protected as a natural monument since 1974. On a clear day the wider landscape is part of the reason to climb; in low cloud, reassess whether the ascent is worthwhile.

Snorrastaðir is also the named service area for the route. Check its current arrangements when you arrive, and use the marked access rather than crossing nearby farmland to shorten the walk.

## Questions before you go

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Where does the Eldborg hike start?**

At the Snorrastaðir service area off Route 54, according to Visit West Iceland. Use that named trailhead when planning your drive.

**How long is the Eldborg trail?**

Visit West Iceland lists the trail at 6.64 km. Allow for your own pace, the rough footing and time at the crater; the final climb has high steps and chains.

**Is Eldborg suitable for an easy roadside stop?**

It requires a walk across lava followed by a climb. The tourism board warns of sparse markings, high steps and places where route-finding can be difficult. Choose a shorter stop if these do not suit your group.

**Is Eldborg protected?**

Yes. Eldborg became a natural monument in 1974. Follow the established route and any site restrictions.
