## How to Get to Thorshofn

**By car:** About 2.5 hours from Husavik or 3 hours from Akureyri via Route 85. A 4x4 is recommended for Langanes Peninsula roads.

**By air:** Norlandair lists an Akureyri–Vopnafjordur–Thorshofn–Akureyri service. Check the date-specific timetable and arrange your onward ground transport; the flight does not provide access along Langanes.

**Planning:** Fill up on fuel before arriving. Services are very limited, so prepare accordingly.

## Best Time to Visit Thorshofn

**Summer:** Essential for Langanes access. Best birdwatching June-August when colonies are active.

**Winter:** Very challenging conditions. Roads to Langanes typically impassable. Northern Lights visible but limited services.

## A flight option and a short heritage detour

[Norlandair’s timetable](<https://www.norlandair.is/en/flight-schedule>), checked September 10, 2026, lists the Akureyri–Vopnafjordur–Thorshofn–Akureyri circuit on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays under its February–September 2026 Vopnafjordur section. The duplicated Thorshofn section has an older date range. Confirm the actual flight for your date, particularly beyond September, and arrange a transfer or vehicle separately before booking.

For a visit focused on the people of Langanes, [Saudaneshus](<https://www.husmus.is/en/saudaneshus>) is seven kilometers north of town. The exhibition explains how residents used local resources, including driftwood and seabirds. The operator lists June 15–August 15, Tuesday–Sunday 13:00–17:00, with winter closure and group access by arrangement. It is a distinct stop from the drive to the peninsula’s outer cliffs; do not assume it is open simply because a road is passable.
