## The wartime museum is about civilian life too

The [Icelandic Wartime Museum](<https://www.fjardabyggd.is/menning/sofn/islenska-stridsarasafnid>) focuses on how the occupation affected life in Iceland. Its displays include a barracks hut, a cinema, objects and wartime photographs. This makes it a useful stop for understanding the community around the military base, as well as the military presence itself.

For a regular walk-in visit, the listed season is June 1–August 31, daily 13:00–17:00. September–May requires an arrangement through [sofn@fjardabyggd.is](<mailto:sofn@fjardabyggd.is>) or +354 470 9063. The May 2026 tariff also specifies a 14,000 ISK base charge for opening outside normal hours for groups smaller than 20, plus admission. Ask for the full charge before arranging a private opening.

The municipality’s [report on a proposed new exhibition](<https://www.fjardabyggd.is/frettir/mikill-ahugi-a-framtid-stridsarasafnsins>) describes community consultation and work still in development. It does not establish a completed new display or a reopening date. Use the current museum listing when planning a visit, and ask staff about any access changes.
