# Gjogur on the Strandir Coast

A small Strandir hamlet with scheduled flights from Reykjavik; onward transport needs its own plan.

Population

Westfjords • Strandir Coast

Gjogur sits on the rugged Strandir coast of Iceland's Westfjords, one of the most isolated stretches of coastline in the country. The hamlet has roughly 10 permanent residents, sea cliffs, a small airstrip, and access to the Strandir coastline. The draw is plain: birdlife, empty landscape, and solitude.

## How to Get to Gjogur

**From Reykjavik:** Drive north on Route 1 to Bru junction, then take Route 68 into the Westfjords. Continue on Route 643 along the Strandir coast to reach Gjogur. The drive is approximately 310 km and takes 5-6 hours in good conditions. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended, especially for the gravel sections of Route 643.

**By Air:** Norlandair publishes flights from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Gjogur in both summer and winter. The September 2026 timetable gives a 35-minute scheduled flight; arrange transport from the airstrip separately.

## Best Time to Visit Gjogur

**Summer (June-August):** Long daylight gives more time for the Strandir drive and coastal stops. Confirm road access, accommodation and any excursion for the date you travel.

**Winter (October-April):** Norlandair publishes winter flights, but a flight booking does not establish road access or visitor services. Plan with your host and carrier, allowing flexibility for weather disruption.

## A winter flight is an air connection, not an onward itinerary

[Norlandair’s timetable](<https://www.norlandair.is/en/flight-schedule>), checked September 10, 2026, lists Monday and Friday flights for September and again for October 1, 2026–April 30, 2027. The published times are Reykjavik 12:30–Gjogur 13:05, returning from Gjogur at 13:30 and reaching Reykjavik at 14:05.

That 25-minute scheduled turnaround provides no meaningful sightseeing interval. For a stay on Strandir, book the return date and ground pickup with the same care as the outward flight. A missed or canceled departure can change both accommodation and onward plans.

The June–August 2026 schedule had one weekly Friday flight. The carrier therefore publishes more weekly departures in the current winter period than in that summer timetable. Recheck a future season directly rather than assuming either pattern repeats.

## Gjogur FAQs

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Does Gjogur have scheduled flights?**

Yes. Norlandair publishes Reykjavik–Gjogur flights, including Monday and Friday services for September 2026 and October 2026–April 2027. Check the booking and flight status for your date.

**Is the airstrip summer-only?**

No. The current carrier timetable includes winter flights. Weather can still disrupt an individual departure.

**Can I use Gjogur as a Hornstrandir transfer?**

Arrange any onward boat or expedition directly before booking a flight. Do not assume a Hornstrandir departure connects with a Gjogur flight.

**What should I arrange before flying?**

Book onward ground transport, accommodation, food and the return flight. The airport timetable alone does not provide those services.

**How do I plan the drive?**

The Strandir approach follows Route 643. Check current road conditions and your accommodation’s access advice before leaving; winter flights do not imply that the road is open.
