Rural valley

North Iceland • Fnjoskadalur area

Dalsmynni is part of the North Iceland landscape around Fnjoskadalur and Eyjafjordur. The useful distinction when planning a drive is between the inhabited valley and the separate route north into Flateyjardalur. Choosing a destination by name alone can also send you to a different Dalsmynni elsewhere in Iceland.

## Separate the valley drive from the mountain-road excursion

[Thingeyjarsveit’s description](<https://www.thingeyjarsveit.is/is/english>) places the Flateyjardalur route just south of the Thvera River in Dalsmynni. It runs north toward a formerly inhabited valley reaching the sea. The municipality describes that approach as passable in summer only, using jeeps or larger vehicles. A normal drive through the surrounding countryside does not establish that this side route is suitable for your car.

The same municipal guide describes Fnjoskadalur as the valley of the Fnjoska River and identifies Vaglaskogur among its woods. Use the [Fnjoskadalur guide](<https://www.iceland.org/valleys/fnjoskadalur>) to plan that part of the trip. For a northbound excursion, check [current road conditions](<https://umferdin.is/en>) and your vehicle’s suitability before leaving the main route.

The municipal page retains older administrative and population information, so its geographic description should not be read as a current opening notice. Check the exact destination and road status for the day you travel.
