## Quick Answer

Budardalur is the main village of the Dalir region, where Leif Eriksson grew up. The Leifsbudir center and the reconstructed Eirikstadir longhouse tell the story.

Budardalur is the hub of the Dalir region, one of Iceland's most historically significant areas. This is where Eirik the Red raised his son Leif Eriksson, the first European to set foot in North America around 1000 AD. The landscape is the setting of the Laxdaela Saga, and the reconstructed Eirikstadir longhouse shows how the settlers lived.

## How to Get to Budardalur

**From Reykjavik:** 2 hours via Route 1 north past Borgarnes, then Route 60 into the Dalir region.

**From Stykkisholmur:** 1 hour east via Routes 54 and 60.

**Westfjords route:** Budardalur is on the main route from Reykjavik to the Westfjords, so it works as a natural stopover.

## Best Time to Visit Budardalur

**Summer:** Eirikstadir longhouse tours operate daily. Best weather for exploring saga sites and the countryside.

**Winter:** The museum’s posted regular season runs March 15–October 31, 10:00–17:00. Check directly for visits outside that season rather than assuming winter tours are running.

## Eiríksstaðir: the reconstruction and the ruins

At [Eiríksstaðir Living History Museum](<https://www.eiriksstadir.is/>), the furnished longhouse and excavated farmhouse are separate parts of the visit. The operator describes the longhouse as an experimental-archaeology reconstruction built in 1999 using period methods and materials. Inside, guides tell stories in English throughout the day; the operator says visitors can join at any time.

Outside, a paved path passes the Leif Eiríksson statue before a woodchip path leads toward the ruins. The museum identifies a paved continuation to a bridge for visitors who find the woodchip difficult. Consult its accessibility guide for your needs rather than assuming every part of the site has the same surface.

The regular hours posted when checked on September 10, 2026 were March 15–October 31, 10:00–17:00. That makes the operator’s season a better starting point for a spring or autumn visit than a general “summer attraction” label.
