# Stuðlagil Canyon

Updated September 10, 2026 · [Published by Iceland.org](<https://www.iceland.org/about-us>) · [Writing & review](<https://www.iceland.org/editorial-policy#credits>)

Choose a parking area before setting off for Stuðlagil. Grund’s observation-platform approach and the hike from Klaustursel are separate visits with different walking commitments. Neither requires you to ford Jökla.

## Match the walk to the parking point

- **Grund:** the viewing-platform approach, with parking and toilets described by the regional destination guide. Follow the current marked paths and platforms.
- **Klaustursel bridge parking:** about 10 km there and back to the canyon.
- **Parking by Stuðlafoss:** about 5 km there and back, passing the basalt-framed waterfall.

These are the distances in [Visit Austurland’s current route description](<https://www.east.is/en/place/studlagil-canyon>), checked September 10, 2026. The two hike lengths explain why guides give different figures for a visit to the same canyon. Use the parking names when navigating from Route 923.

## Stay on the viewing routes

[SafeTravel’s Stuðlagil guidance](<https://safetravel.is/travel-conditions/studlagil-safety/>) is explicit: stay out of the water, respect closures and avoid the riverbank. Cold water and a strong current remain dangerous when the surface looks calm. Wet rocks and unstable edges also make a scramble toward the water a poor substitute for the designated platforms.

## Why the color changes

Lower river levels following the hydropower development exposed more of the basalt. Clearer water can look blue-green, but reservoir overflow brings a different appearance. The regional guide says overflow is most common from August to October. Plan to see the canyon’s rock formations; a particular water color cannot be booked.

For another East Iceland walk with basalt columns, compare [Litlanesfoss on the Hengifoss trail](<https://www.iceland.org/basalt-columns/litlanesfoss>).

## Questions before you go

Quick answers with safety notes where it matters.

**Which Stuðlagil parking area should I choose?**

Grund serves the viewing-platform approach. Klaustursel serves the longer hike: Visit Austurland lists about 10 km return from the bridge parking or 5 km return from the parking by Stuðlafoss. Choose the actual parking point before comparing walking distances.

**Do I need to cross the river on foot?**

Do not ford or enter Jökla. Use the designated bridge and marked access routes. SafeTravel says to stay out of the water at all times and avoid the slippery, unstable riverbank.

**Is the river always turquoise?**

No. Reservoir overflow and seasonal flow can make it gray-brown. Visit Austurland says overflow is most common from August to October, but can happen at other times.

**Is parking free at both approaches?**

A current tariff for both parking areas was not established in the sources checked for this guide. Read the terms at your chosen car park rather than assuming that both are free.
