Occasion used to urge the foundation of an Icelandic Society
On 17th June the Ambassador held an afternoon reception at the official residence in Pretoria to commemorate Iceland’s Independence Day. This was the first time the embassy in Pretoria has held such an event.
Every Icelander known by the Embassy to be living in South Africa was invited, as were Iceland’s honorary consuls, ambassadors of Nordic countries, representatives of Nordic trade associations and representatives of Icelandic companies operating in South Africa.
A total of about 40 people were in attendance, including a family from Cape Town and Iceland’s consul in Durban. The national anthem was played and the Ambassador addressed the assembled guests. Snacks and hot dogs (in true Icelandic style) were served and children received goodie bags.
Ambassador Kristmundsdóttir used the occasion to urge resident Icelanders to form an Icelandic Society and she pledged the embassy’s support to this end.

Sendiherra lofaði stuðningi sendiráðsins við stofnun Íslendingafélag
Í tilefni af þjóðhátíð bauð sendiherra til móttöku í sendiráðsbústaðnum á þjóðhátíðardaginn á milli kl. 15:00 og 17:00. Dagurinn hefur ekki áður verið haldinn hátíðlegur af sendiráðinu.
Til móttökunnar var boðið öllum Íslendingum sem sendiráðið hefur upplýsingar um í Suður Afríku, ræðismönnum Íslands, sendiherrum norrænu ríkjanna, fulltrúum norræna viðskiptasamfélagsins og íslenskra fyrirtækja í landinu og fulltrúa utanríkisráðuneytis Suður Afríku.
Alls sóttu um 40 manns boðið, þar á meðal íslensk fjölskylda frá Höfðaborg og ræðismaður Íslands í Durban. Þjóðsöngurinn var leikinn og sendiherra flutti ávarp. Síðan var boðið upp á snittur og pylsur fyrir börnin, sem einnig fengu blöðrur og nammi í poka. Var þetta hin skemmtilegasta stund.
Sendiherra hvatti Íslendingana til að stofna Íslendingafélag og lofaði stuðningi sendiráðsins við það.
