Donations Pledged for Makeba Charity
Government and private assistance to shelter for girls
Iceland’s Foreign Minister, Valgerdur Sverrisdóttir, used the occasion of the opening of the Embassy of Iceland on 26 February to announce a three-year Government of Iceland grant to the Makeba Centre for Girls. Donations were also pledged by three large Icelandic companies and a Reykjavik based Rotary Club branch. The Makeba Centre for Girls, a charity established by world renowned South African singer Miriam Makeba, is a registered non-profit rehabilitation home which provides a caring environment for girls who come from poor and abusive backgrounds. The facility provides full board and lodging, access to education and health care, rehabilitation and reintegration counselling plus life skills training .
