Iceland opened its first Embassy in Africa in Maputo, Mozambique, in July 2001. As diplomatic relations grew on this continent, the Ambassador was also accredited to Angola, Benin, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia. The Embassy was moved from Maputo to Pretoria, South Africa in November 2005.

Credentials presented in Botswana
On 27 February 2008, Dr. Sigridur Duna Kristmundsdottir, Ambassador of Iceland, presented her Credentials to His Exellency Mr. Festus G. Mogae, President of Botswana, as Ambassador of Iceland to Botswana with residence in South Africa.

On 1 February, Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies, and Her Excellency Dr Sigridur Duna Kristmundsdottir, Ambassador of Iceland in South Africa, signed an Agreement regarding Iceland's core support to the Institution.
