Prime Minister Halldor Asgrimsson wrote to President George W. Bush, expressing Iceland´s sympathy towards the people of the United States in light of the devastating consequences of hurricane Katrina.

Dear Mr. President,
On behalf of my government and the people of Iceland, I wish to convey my heartfelt sympathy to your people and in particular to the families struck by the devastation caused by the hurricane Katrina. We are all shocked by the loss of lives and destruction caused by this frightful and unprecedented natural disaster.
We wish your government and the American people strength and endurance in the recovery efforts that lie ahead.
