Iceland pledges $155,000 to educate displaced Iraqi children
The Government of Iceland has pledged 10 million Icelandic Kronas (approximately USD 155,000) to UNHCR and UNICEF to help displaced Iraqi children and their families.
Of the two million externally displaced Iraqis, there are estimated 500 thousand children of school age, according to UN figures. Those children have limited access to schools or other educational services and many displaced children struggle to learn in over-crowded classrooms in Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon.
UNHCR and UNICEF have called for USD 129 million in order to enrol as many as 155 thousand displaced Iraqi children in school, thereof 100 thousand in Syria and 50 thousand in Jordan.
Furthermore, the Government of Iceland recently made an additional 7 million Kronas (approximately USD 108,000) contribution to the IFRC and Red Crescent in Iraq, to assist elderly, disabled and orphaned Iraqis.
