CERF
Statement by Ambassador Hjálmar W. Hannesson, Permanent Representative of Iceland to the United Nations, at the High-level Conference on the Central Emergency Response Fund.
Mr. Under Secretary General
Iceland warmly welcomes the successful launch of the Central Emergency Response Fund, in March this year.
We all know that extensive delays in getting humanitarian assistance to those in need can prove to be disastrous. For that reason, predictable, fast and sound funding in the wake of humanitarian disasters is of essence.
Here, the Central Emergency Response Fund has already proven its important role, as it can provide a reliable source of finance that helps agencies on the ground to deal with humanitarian problems quickly.
Iceland has already made a contribution of one hundred and fifty thousand UDS to the CERF. The Fund has fulfilled our expectations, which in turn translates into continued and increased contribution.
We are pleased to observe the enthusiasm with which member states have pledged increased contributions to the Fund, and we are glad to inform you that the Government of Iceland will contribute two hundred and fifty thousand USD (250.000) to the Fund for the year 2007.
Last, but not least, I join all those who have thanked you, Jan Egeland, for your important inputs in the humanitarian field. Held och lycka til dig I fremtiden.
