Changes in the Icelandic Government
Mr. Halldor Asgrimsson (Progressive Party) has resigned as Prime Minister and Head of Government. The current Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geir H. Haarde (Independence Party), will take over as Prime Minister in a meeting of the State Council on Thursday, June 15th, 2006.
Other changes in the Government are as follows:
Mrs. Valgedur Sverrisdottir (Progressive Party), current Minister of Industry and Commerce will become the Minister for Foreign Affairs,
Mr. Jon Sigurdsson, member of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Iceland, will become Minister of Industry and Commerce,
Mr. Magnus Stefansson, Member of the Parliament (Progressive Party) will replace Mr. Jon Kristjansson as Minister of Social Affairs, and Mrs. Jonina Bjartmarz, Member of the Parliament (Progressive Party) will replace Mrs. Sigridur Anna Thordardottir as Minister for the Environment and Nordic Co-operation.
