Ambassador Benedikt Asgeirsson met with A.Krainiy

17.1.2008

A.Krainiy told about ongoing reforms in the Russian fisheries and stressed that new rules of allocation of fish quotas for 10 years instead of 5 are expected to boost capitalization of the sector and renewal of the fishing fleet. According to him foreign investments are in high demand in fish processing where not only money but technologies are needed whereas Russia has enough fishermen and fleet capacity in fishing.

The Russian side was very keen to study Icelandic experience of fish auctions (markets). A Russian project led by National Fish Resources state owned company is aimed at establishing 7 fish markets in main Russian ports.

A.Krainiy welcomed a delegation of Icelandic businessmen to Kaliningrad headed by the Trade Coucil of Iceland, due in April 2008, and pointed out that the Kaliningrad enclave is a special economic zone with 6-year “zero” taxes on profit and property and a duty free import regime for technological equipment.
