Positive foreign trade balance in March
The March figure represents an increase over the February surplus of ISK 6bn. The sizeable surplus is welcome news for the Icelandic economy, as it is necessary for its financing and gives clear evidence of its resilience and adaptability.
The positive goods trade balance should encourage ISK strengthening, or at least prevent its weakening, in particular in view of the tightening of currency controls approved by the Althingi earlier this week. Further surpluses are expected in the goods trade balance in coming months, showing the rapid adjustment of the economy to the changed environment.
