First migratory birds arrive in Iceland

27.3.2007

The first birds to arrive in Iceland are those who spend the winter in Europe, like geese, sea gulls, swans and oystercatchers. But birds like wheatears, whimbrels and dunlins, which go all the way to Africa, arrive last. Arctic terns travel the furthest distance of all migratory birds in Iceland; the birds spend the winter in Antarctica.
