New Icelandic Ambassador
Dr. Gunnar Pálsson is Iceland's new Ambassador (designate) to India, succeeding Ambassador Sturla Sigurjonsson who in October was called back to Iceland to take up duties in the Office of the Prime Minister. Ambassador Palsson has a distinguished carrier in the Icelandic foreign service, most recently as the Director of the Foreign Ministry's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs. Earlier, Dr. Palsson was Iceland's Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Brussels, and to the United Nations in New York. Ambassador Palsson holds a Ph.D. degree in political science and an M.A. degree in philosophy. He is married with three children.

Iceland and USA sign security agreement
Icelandic Prime Minister, Geir H. Haarde, and Foreign Minister, Valgerdur Sverrisdóttir, met US Foreign Minister Condoleezza Rice in Washington DC on October 11, 2006. At the meeting, the Ministers signed an agreement on US’s future role in Iceland’s defense. This agreement marks both an end of an era, and a new beginning in the longstanding defense relationship between Iceland and the US.

Confederation of Indian Industry and Embassy of Iceland held a seminar on "EFTA - A Viable European Free trade Partner for India". The briefing was given by Ambassador Grétar Már Sigurðsson, Permanent Secretary of State of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, on October 3, 2006.
Iceland contributes to humanitarian assistance in Darfur
Valgerður Sverrisdóttir, the Foreign Minister of Iceland, has decided to contribute 20 million ISK equivalent to 0,3 million USD to humanitarian and emergency assistance in the Darfur region in Sudan.

Indian Navy Team in Iceland
Last July, an Indian Navy Team visited Iceland, led by Commander Satyabrata Dam. The team went to Vatnajokull Glacier which is the world´s third largest glacier and climbed Hvannadalshnukur, the glaciers´highest peak, 7,100 feet.
Iceland increases presence in Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission
The Icelandic Government has decided to increase its presence in the Sri Lanka Truce Monitoring Mission (SLMM). Up to 10 Icelanders will be members of the SLMM.

Iceland provides humanitarian assistance to the victims of the conflict in Lebanon
Ms. Valgerður Sverrisdóttir, the Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs, decided 15 August 2006 to contribute 0,2 million USD to emergency and humanitarian assistance to the victims of the conflict in Lebanon. The amount is equally divided between UN´s WFP and the International Red Cross (ICRC).

The Icelandic Minister for Culture, Education and Science, Ms. Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, formally inaugurated the new Icelandic Embassy in New Delhi.
