The Icelandic Love Corporation in Berlin
The Icelandic Love Corporation's solo exhibition The Tent Lady's Hospitality is the inaugural show of Ard Bia Berlin. Ard Bia Berlin is a satellite venture of Ard Bia Gallery, Ireland, which incorporates an exhibition space and international residential studio program. The Icelandic Love Corporation is a group of three artists, Eirún Sigurðardóttir (1971), Jóní Jónsdóttir (1972), and Sigrún Hrólfsdóttir (1973). They have been working together since graduating from The Icelandic Academy of the Arts in 1996, devising performances, installations, videos and photos. Studying respectively in Hochschule der Kunste Berlin, The Royal Danish Academy of the Arts, Copenhagen and Pratt Institute, New York City, the ILC have presented over 200 performances and exhibitions worldwide, predominantly in Europe and the US. A large retrospective at the Reykjavik Art Museum in 2007 displayed the majority of their major works. An exhibition hall dedicated entirely to their Performance practice, investigated how performance work can be preserved. They worked closely with the architectural firm THG Iceland to realise this project and produced alongside the retrospective a publication with texts by 22 different people who have touched their career in some way. Their new video piece The Tent Lady's Hospitality (2008) is part of an ongoing project which explores the transition between art and function through the medium of clothing and protection. The Tent Lady (2007) is a sculptural work, a dress that serves as a tent, which is worn in the video piece by a dancer who is suspended in space. She wears this practical garment while serving tea with her feet. She invites visitors into her sacred dwelling under her skirt. Like the snail The Tent Lady is stuck to her home, but unlike the snail she is able to pop out or invite company back for a cup of tea, conversation and other pleasures. Her dress is her temple. The Icelandic Love Corporation will be living, working and exhibiting in Ard Bia Berlin for the month of April.
