The Parliamentary Assembly

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which held its first session on 10 August 1949, can be considered the oldest international parliamentary Assembly with a pluralistic composition of democratically elected members of parliament established on the basis of an intergovernmental treaty. The Assembly and the Committee of Ministers are the two statutory organs of the Council of Europe.

The Parliamentary Assembly consists of a number of individual representatives from each member State, with a President elected each year from among them for a maximum period of three sessions.

The sessions of the Parliamentary Assembly are divided into four part-sessions, each lasting for about a week at the end of January, April, June and the beginning of October.

Iceland is represented in the Parliamentary Assembly by a delegation of 3 representatives and 3 substitutes.
- Ms. Guðfinna S. Bjarnadóttir is the head of the delegation.
