Getting Married in Iceland

These are the requirements regarding marriage in Iceland:

1. You have to be 18 years of age.
2. A birth certificate and a valid passport have to be presented.
3. A medical certificate from your doctor stating that you have no communicable diseases has to be presented.
4. A certificate of marital status has to be presented (does not apply to U.S. citizens).
5. If you have been married before, you have to present a divorce decree (original) signed by the Ministry of Justice in Reykjavik.
6. If you are widow/widower official documents regarding estate/or collected assets and liabilities of a deceased person has to be presented.
7. An application form from the office of the District Magistrate of Reykjavik has to be filled out and two best men (witnesses, one for each) certifying ability for marriage, must either have written their names on the application form in advance or do it in the office. The best men must be over 18 years old and their birthday/month/year is needed as well as their signature. The best men do not need to be at the weeding, only if you decide so, but as mentioned before full signature/birthday/month/year is needed. Please also write all names in block letters, as sometimes it is very hard to read signatures. You will have to have the required documents delivered to the office of the District Magistrate of Reykjavik two working days before the ceremony at the latest, except if you mail your copies then they have to arrive at least 2 weeks before the ceremony.  If you mail your documents please give telephone and/or fax number where you can be reached in case further information is needed.
