Acknowledgements to Dr. Jack D. Ives
Dr. Jack D. Ives, who was born in Grimsby in England, arrived on his first expedition to Iceland in 1952 with a group of professors and fellow students from the University of Nottingham. Since then Dr. Ives has visited Iceland more than 20 times and become an expert on Icelandic glaciers. He has been closely attached to the natural beauty of the SE-region of Iceland where he also made long-lasting friendship with local farmers and their families, in particular farmer Ragnar Stefansson in Skaftafell.
Later in his professional life, Dr. Ives became professor of geography at universities in the United States and in Canada where he also worked for Canadian government institutions.
I an introduction to his book “Skaftafell in Iceland - a thousand years of change”, former President of Iceland, Mrs. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, writes:
“Scientists from other countries have provided invaluable assistance with research into Icelandic nature for which we will always remain indebted, Jack Ives, the author of this beautiful and fascinating book, is one of the scientists who has been captivated by the wonders of Skaftafell and been involved in research into what lies behind the might forces of nature. He is an internationally renowned expert on the mountainous regions of the Earth and a passionate conservationist of nature and cultural treasures as an advisor to the UNESCO selection committee for World Heritage Sites, including Iceland’s natural shrine, Thingvellir.”
