Icelandic mosaics showcased in Ottawa
The Canadian-Icelandic artist Alice Olivia Clarke showcased her mosaics at the gallery La Petite Mort in Ottawa June 15-18 in collaboration with the Embassy of Iceland.
The artist was raised in Ottawa where she met her husband, Icelandic architect Kári Eiríksson, who at the time was studying at Carlton University. For the last 14 years they have lived in Hafnarfjördur near Reykjavík where Alice Olivia has her studio. She is a well known artist in Iceland and her large mosaics decorate official buildings in her hometown as well as some public places in Reykjavík.
Describing the theme for her Ottawa exhibit, Alice made this statement:
“I decided to explore my new home, Iceland, interpret it and recreate it in the way I see it. The way I’ve experienced it. I’ve taken in the hot springs, the glaciers, the moss, the stones the colours and decided to make them my own. The pieces I bring are artefacts of the larger pieces I’ve left behind. The creation of the mosaics is not complete once they’ve been glued and cemented together. It’s always possible to experience something new each time they’re seen or touched. But what intrigues me most of all is the warmth which radiates from the pieces, despite the cold, hard nature of the material”.http://www.aok.is
