Iceland honours Canadian Veterans
The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa arrived in Iceland in July 1940 as a part of the Allied occupation of Iceland. This year is the 150 th anniversary of the formation of the Regiment.
The Ambassador of Iceland to Canada, the Mayor of Reykjavík, and the Commanding Officer of the Regiment in association with the Friends of Iceland in Ottawa, invite to a public ceremony at the Cartier Drill Hall, 2 Queen Elizabeth Drive, at 2:00 p.m. to acknowledge the contribution made by Canadian Veterans in the defense of Iceland, and the immense difference it made in the outcome of World War 2.
Canadian soldiers of Icelandic descent who served in both World Wars will be remembered especially.
There will be entertainment by the pipes and drums of the Regiment; veterans who served in Iceland will be present, many with family members; there will be dignitaries representing other Regiments that were there at the same time; and there will be the presentation of items of remembrance by Canadians to the Mayor of Reykjavík.
