Leif Erikson Day celebrated in Edmonton
In his proclamation of July 28th 2006 Mayor of the City of Edmonton Stephen Mandel states the following:
“WHEREAS, more than 1,000 years ago, Leif Erikson and his crew journeyed across the Atlantic seeking unknown lands;
AND WHEREAS, their pioneering spirit of courage, determination, and discovery helped to open the world to new exploration and unprecedented development;
AND WHEREAS, September 30th is recognized as “Leif Erikson Day” by our friends in Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland who celebrate this day with commemorative ceremonies and events;
THEREFORE I, MAYOR STEPHEN MANDEL, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 30, 2006
“LEIF ERIKSON DAY” IN EDMONTON, ALBERTA´S CAPITAL CITY.
The Icelandic Canadian Club of Edmonton, “Nordurljós”, and its 320 members will be hosting their inaugural Leif Eriksson Day Dinner on the above-noted date.
The event will be held at 6:00 p.m. on September 30, at the Dutch Canadian and Scandinavian Centre, 13312-142 Street, Edmonton.
The entire weekend will be spent enjoying the Icelandic heritage and celebrating the life and accomplishments of Leifur Eiríksson. Several activities are planned including having historian Nelson
Gerrard in attendance for the weekend to provide genealogy help to club members.
The Ambassador of Iceland to Canada has been invited to the festivities to bring greetings from his office and the Government of Iceland.
