Icelandic Club in Vatnabyggd celebrates 25th anniversary

People of Icelandic descent and other friends of Iceland in Saskatchewan celebrated the 25th anniversary of their Vatnabyggd Icelandic Club of Saskatchewan in Wynyard on April 1st 2006.

Þorramatur á borðum í WynyardDelicious food, including Icelandic specialties and numerous other dishes prepared by the ladies, was served in abundance on a buffet table. Under the leadership of club president Shirley-Ann Laxdal and her associates, a varied and entertaining program had been arranged with the participation of many of the club members.

P4010909Among these was Icelandic storytelling by Joan Eyjolfsson Cadham and speeches made by Honorary Consul of Iceland in Regina, Jón Örn Jónsson and Ambassador of Iceland to Canada, Markús Örn Antonsson. Musical numbers included the Icelandic Choir and the Fiddling Farmers who played to the dance.

Ambassador Antonsson and his wife toured the area close to Wynyard the following day with their hosts in the Icelandic Club and visited the memorial monument for the Minnismerki í ElfrosIcelandic Vatnabyggd settlement at Elfros. They also paid visits at two Icelandic prairie farms.

The Ambassador was on an official visit to Saskatchewan at the same time. He met with Hon. Dr. Lynda M. Haverstock at Government House and was welcomed at a session of the Legislative Assembly by the Speaker, Hon. P. Myren Kowalsky, who addressed the Ambassador to be followed by the Premier and leaders of both parties in the Assembly. All emphasized the invaluable contribution by Icelandic settlers to their communities in Saskatchewan, and the cordial relations between Canada and Iceland, past and present.

The Ambassador had the opportunity to exchange views with trade officials in Regina and visit the Regina Research Park, which is affiliated with the University of Regina
