Iceland Symphony Orchestra on 19 February in Vienna
On 19 February 2007 the Iceland Symphony Orchestra will give a concert at 7.30 p.m. in the big concert hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus. The programme contains the overture to "Galdra Loftur", op. 10, by the Icelandic composer Jón Leifs, concert for piano and orchestra a-moll, op. 16, by Edvard Grieg and symphony nr. 5 d-moll, op. 47, by Dmitrij Schostakowitsch. The orchestra will be accompanied on the piano by the famous Russian pianist Lilya Zilberstein, conductor is Rumon Gamba.
The Iceland Symphony Orchestra was established in 1950 and has reached in a short time a high level of artistry. The orchestra gives approximately sixty concerts each season, including subscription concerts i Reykjavik, and tours both in Iceland and abroad, with recent visits to the Faeroes, Greenland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Canada and USA. Among the conductors who greatly influenced the orchestra's development, are Olav Kielland from Norway, Bohdan Wodiczko from Poland, Karsten Andersen from Norway, Jean-Pierre Jacquillat from France and during the last years the two Finnish conductors Petri Sakari og Osmo Vänskä. The young British Rumon Gamba is now the conductor, and Vladimir Ashkenazy accepted the post of "conductor laureate" in 2002.
