Expert level conference against trafficking in labour
An OSCE conference against trafficking in human labour titled "Alliance Against Trafficking in Persons: Human Trafficking for Labour Exploitation/Forced and Bonded Labour, Prosecution of Offenders, Justice for Victims" was held in Vienna the 16th and 17th of November 2006.
Human trafficking is a centuries old problem and one of Iceland’s main emphases within the OSCE. With increased labour migration the risk of persons becoming victims to such a crime has increased ever more. The fight against human trafficking therefore requires a multidimensional and multi-actor response that is co-coordinated nationally and internationally since trafficking is often linked with organized crime and other criminal operations
It has proven to be extremely challenging to collect evidence against and convict perpetrators since trafficking victims are rarely willing to accuse or give witness against their abusers. Victims are often subjected to mental and physical violence, are indebted to traffickers, unaware of their legal status and afraid of deportation.
